Basketball Camp Companion came about as a result of attending a Father/Son basketball camp put on by Rick Majerus at the University of Utah several years ago. Emphasis was on developing basketball fundamentals and Coach Majerus did a masterful job of breaking down each skill. Affraid that I would not remember the instruction so that I could continue to work with my boy after camp, I scribbled notes on a yellow pad at intervals in the instruction. After the camp ended other fathers came to me and asked for a copy of my notes. I told Coach Majerus about my experience and asked if he had ever thought about writing a baskeball camp companion book. He said he had thought about it but declined my offer to help him put it together.
Tommy Conner, a camp assistance and former Runnin' Ute who played under Coach Majerus, overheard my conversation. He pulled me aside and said, "You don't need Rick. Just write it". So I did and Tommy was kind enough to review the draft and encourage me to publish it. He told me: "There are a lot of books on basketball written by names recognized in the field, but I like what you have done. I really think you have something here".
With this encouragement I published the book. Tommy bought 200 for his next summer basketball camp and Basketball Camp Companion has been used ever since by hundreds of other coaches and recreational leagues to help teach the fundamentals of basketball.
